category of non verbal communication: Spatial
There are several ways that nonverbal communication can be categorised, for an example, proxemics, spatial arrangements, environmental factors, chronemics, artifacts, kinesics, eye contact, facial expression and touch. Below I will discussion only one aspect which is spatial arrangements.
Spatial arrangements
Spatial arrangements is a form of territorial, however it affects communication in terms of who can talk with who, when, and for how long. Teachers might structure classroom desks to what they prefer is best for the students and themselves. There are several seating arrangements that can be made in the classroom. The most common arrangement is known as the traditional row. The students that will interact more are seated in the centre as it promotes a higher interaction between teacher and student. The other seating arrangements is known as the horses shoe and the modular. The modular and the horses shoe arrangements is believed to be the most comfortable seating arrangement for students. The least comfortable seating arrangement for both teacher and student is for the teacher to be seated in the centre of the room with the students sitting around him or her. The horses shoe and modular promote a higher student to student interaction (Simons, cooper, 2011).
